When Japanese craftsmanship comes to Paris
What if we discover Japan through the objects that accompany our daily routines?
From October 23 to 25, 2026, head to iRASSHAi on Rue du Louvre to discover Tsubame-Sanjo, a Niigata Prefecture region in Japan whose history is closely tied to metalwork. Just two hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen, Tsubame-Sanjo is today celebrated for the richness of its artisanal craft.
For more than four centuries, these crafts have been handed down and reinvented, yielding objects where technical mastery meets the demands of modern life.
From the traditional nail to tableware
The artisanal and industrial history of this region is largely defined by the making of wakugi, the traditional Japanese nails. Over time, metalworking techniques have evolved and diversified. Tsuiki, a dinanderie technique that forges copper by hammering, together with forging, have become emblematic crafts of the region.
Today, that heritage surfaces in a broad spectrum of creations: kitchenware, accessories, and tableware as art objects. Behind their apparent simplicity and clean lines lie precise techniques, a deep mastery of materials, and a relentless pursuit of quality.
In Tsubame-Sanjo, monozukuri, the Japanese art of crafting objects with care and high standards, isn’t just about safeguarding age-old traditions. It also relies on local artisans and companies to push their techniques forward to suit today’s needs.
Three days to discover Tsubame-Sanjo at iRASSHAi
Organized by the Tsubame-Sanjo Promotion Center, this three-day pop-up showcases iconic goods from the region, staged at iRASSHAi, the Paris spot dedicated to Japanese cuisine. Expect a lineup of kitchenware and tableware, inviting visitors to discover a fresh facet of Japanese design through this vibrant region.
The Tsubame-Sanjo team will be on hand to welcome visitors, showcase the products and share the story of this distinctive region. It’s an opportunity to discover not only the items but also the techniques and artisanal culture, whether you’re a cooking aficionado, a design enthusiast, or simply curious about Japanese craftsmanship.
A Japanese interlude in the heart of Paris
After discovering the pop-up, the visit can be extended into the Louvre area, between the Jardin des Tuileries, the Palais-Royal, and the streets of the center of Paris. A great opportunity to pair cultural discovery with an exploration of Japanese tableware and dining culture.
