It's the most eagerly-awaited event in the soccer world every year: the one that rewards the world's best footballers. This year's Ballon d'Or ceremony will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The year 2024 rewarded Rodri, as the departure of Ronaldo and Messi made way for young, up-and-coming players.
This 69th edition promises to be a special one, as it is set to reward a player who has never won the Ballon d'Or, and for several months now, two names have been standing out in particular: Barcelona's Lamine Yamal andOusmane Dembélé. Dembélé's exceptional season has left its mark, especially since Paris-Saint-Germain won its first Champions League. In fact, the Parisian club's players are particularly numerous in the list of 30 nominees.
Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, for example, are not among the favorites this time. On the French side, in addition to Dembélé and Doué, there are only Mbappé and Michael Olise. On the women's side, there are Sandy Baltimore and Clara Mateo for France, but no Parisian players. For the Trophée Kopa, representing the best hopeful, Désiré Doué and Ayyoub Bouaddi are on the French side.
Goalkeepers include Lucas Chevalier (France, Lille) and Gianluigi Donnarumma for Paris-Saint-Germain, not forgetting Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique for the Johan Cruyff Trophy. Of course, PSG is nominated for the best men's club of the season.
Over the last three years, the rules for the Ballon d'Or have changed, with individual performance now the overriding criterion, while the career criterion has disappeared. Watch the ceremony on September 22 at 8:45pm on L'Equipe.
