What is the place of women in music? Unfortunately, female artists are still less represented than their male counterparts. This is shown by the ranking of the best-selling albums of 2023 in France drawn up by Snep, the national phonographic publishing union. Aya Nakamura is the only female artist in the top 20. On the other hand, the number of female artists in the 2023 chart is up on last year, with 36 projects, more than half of them produced in France (57%). Ranked female artists include Zaho de Sagazan, Mentissa, Ronisia and Nej.
On the concert front, they're doing well. As proof, many of them will soon be performing in Paris. Barbara Pravi, Véronique Sanson, Sylvie Vartan, Hoshi, Santa, Jain, Charlotte Cardin, Camille, Zazie, Louane, Lara Fabian, as well as Taylor Swift, Cat Power, Beth Gibbons, CocoRosie and Olivia Rodrigo... all these female artists will soon be performing in Paris.
