The Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse is hosting a stage adaptation of Voltaire's masterpiece, Candide ou l'Optimisme, until March 30, 2025. Adapted and directed by Didier Long, it takes us back to the Age of Enlightenment, with Charles Templon, Cassandre Vittu de Kerraoul and Sylvain Katan on stage .
Candide ou l'Optimisme, published in 1759 by Voltaire, is a philosophical tale that follows the adventures of Candide, a naive young man raised to believe that "everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds". Driven from his castle, he undergoes a series of ordeals around the world - wars, earthquakes, slavery - that challenge the initial optimism taught by his master Pangloss. The play is performed at the Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse from Tuesday to Saturday at 9pm and on Sundays at 5pm.
The Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse, renowned for its commitment to classic repertoire, offers an intimate setting that lends itself perfectly to this type of show. A favorite with lovers of literary theater, this venue often showcases strong works. At once funny, piquant and philosophical, Voltaire 'sCandide ou l'Optimisme remains a work that, even today, questions man's place in an often cruel world.
