Cityscapes like you've never seen them before... The Musée du Louvre is offering an exhibition entitled La France vue du Grand Siècle, on the Rotonde Sully Nord from March 15 to June 25, 2018. A presentation of the works ofIsraël Silvestre, an artist trained in engraving in the milieu of Jacques Callot, and who devoted himself early on to depicting urban landscapes.
Whether Paris or Rome - the cities he traveled to - or Nancy, the city of his birth, Israël Silvestre's early work was characterized by picturesque "views", generally in small format. Then came the age of maturity, with larger, more elaborate panoramas, including depictions of cities, but also of their lives, with royal festivals in the capital, for example, and its transformations.
The exhibition also features a series of the artist's views of the most beautiful châteaux in the Ile-de-France region: Montmorency, Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Meudon and more. A way of seeing the evolution of architecture and gardens at a glance. Drawings by the artist preserved in the Louvre will be on show to visitors for the first time, as his engravings are more widely distributed.
