An exhibition dedicated to Caravaggio in Paris, it’s an event you don’t want to miss! From September 21, 2018 to January 28, 2019, let’s go to the Musée Jacquemart-André for an analysis of the role and the influence of Caravaggio in Rome who became a master in chiaroscuro.
The exhibition “Caravage à Rome” will be dedicated to Caravaggio’s life in Rome, showing the activity in the great painters’ studios. The display will pay attention to Caravaggio’s relationships with collectors and artists as well as poets and erudite persons of his time who couldn’t be the objects of an exhibition!
Born in 1571 in Milan, Michelangelo Merisi, also known as Caravaggio will revolutionize the Italian painting of the 17th century by using a novating technique: chiaroscuro. When he was 13, Michelangelo Merisi is hired in Milan famous painter Simone Peterzano’s studio. At 21, he leaves his birthplace to join Rome. He’ll meet a wonderful career in Rome but often condemned for fights and flee the city in 1606 after a man was murdered at 37 years old.
For the 16 years he lived in Rome, Caravaggio will create several masterpieces and develop a groundbreaking painting style characterized by an unparalleled realism and humanity.
For the first time, 10 masterpieces painted by Caravaggio will be gathered in the Musée Jacquemart-André rooms, including the two versions of the Penitent Magdalene painted before Caravaggio flees the city and both of them will be displayed at the Parisian Musée Jacquemart-André.
The Musée Jacquemart-André also enjoys a loan including Judith beheading Holofernes (1508), The Lute Player (1595-1596), John the Baptist (Youth with a Ram) (1602), Saint Francis in Prayer (circa 1606), Saint Jerome (1605-1606), Ecce Homo, Supper at Emmaus (1605-1606), Saint Francis, Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy also known as “Madeleine Klain”, Magdalen (1606).
