Victor Hugo's house in Paris, an artistic plunge into the world of the famous author

The Maison de Victor Hugo is tucked away on the Place des Vosges in the heart of Paris. This museum dedicated to France's most famous author lets us discover the apartment where the artist and his family lived.

For a limited time from November 13, 2025, to April 26, 2026, visitors will need to purchase tickets to access the museum, including its permanent collections, due to a special temporary exhibition.

The study, the bedroom, the Chinese salon, the dining room... All the rooms where Victor Hugo lived, where he imagined and wrote some of his greatest works, where he received his friends and mistresses... How would you like to walk (almost) literally in the author's footsteps? Come and discover the Maison de Victor Hugo on Place des Vosges in Paris. The writer's former apartment is now a monographic museum, offering a glimpse into the French artist's home.

You can visit the various living rooms, as well as the regularly changing temporary exhibitions on the second floor of the house. These exhibitions reveal more about the author's life, his hidden talents, his influence, his relationships, his passions... Original editions by the writer, paintings and sculptures paying tribute to him, prints, photographs, caricatures and pieces of furniture are highlighted in the museum's permanent and temporary displays.

The tour takes us through the different rooms of Victor Hugo's house, and leads us to the backstaircase, which Victor Hugo used when he wanted to enter and leave his home discreetly. This staircase allows us to emerge onto the courtyard, which is sure to become your new favorite spot in Paris.

When the weather's fine, you can take advantage of the landscaped inner courtyard. This space, formerly belonging to the neighboring technical high school, has been reclaimed and converted to offer visitors a place to relax. Among the exhibits is a resin copy of the Snake Fountain, a decorative object purchased by Victor Hugo and taken with him on his exile to Guernsey.

This leafy courtyard is home to a café run by Maison Mulot, a brand name that is always at the cutting edge of modernity, without forgetting the classics of patisserie. This new alliance should please us: this café is the perfect place for a gourmet break between two anecdotes on the life of Victor Hugo.

To complete your visit, don't hesitate to use the touch-sensitive terminals installed at the entrance and exit of the house. " The first terminal displays a timeline of Victor Hugo's life, with numerous images. This feature was very much in demand with our visitors. The second terminal takes us on a room-by-room tour of the Guernsey house, to link Victor Hugo's two residences ," explains site manager Gérard Audinet.

For a different way of visiting the museum, you can try out the"Chez Victor Hugo" smartphoneapp. This application serves as afree audioguide, operating in six different languages. There's also a children's tour , a sign language tour and an off-site tour of the author's funeral, retracing the major stages of the funeral procession from the Champs-Élysées to the Panthéon.

Victor Hugo's house also offers a special tour for blind and partially sighted visitors. Not only does the app guide you through the house without hassle, it also includes a commentary and description of the furniture and artworks around you.

The house is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm, except Mondays, January 1, May 1 and December 25. Access to the permanent collections is entirely free, and temporary exhibitions are subject to a charge. To get to the museum, get off at the Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8), Saint-Paul (line 1) or Chemin Vert (line 8) metro stops.
