Close friend of Victor Hugo, Louis Boulanger is at the heart of the exhibition of the Maison Victor Hugo. A fascinating retrospective, to be discovered from November 10th 2022 to March 5th 2023.

The Maison Victor Hugo honors the Romantic painter Louis Boulanger, an artist who was little known but much appreciated by Victor Hugo, who often frequented the apartment on the Place des Vosges during his owner's lifetime. The museum puts the spotlight on Louis Boulanger, a central figure in theFrench art worldof the nineteenth century, who has been unjustly forgotten over the centuries.

From November 10, 2022 to March 5, 2023, the exhibition Louis Boulanger, peintre rêveur (Louis Boulanger, a dreamer painter), reveals more than 180 works, which retrace the career and life of this artist who was much appreciated by his peers.

A great lover ofRomantic art, Louis Boulanger adopted the codes of his time, choosing to represent tormented subjects, tragic dramas, and accentuating the anguish and pain of his stories by using chiaroscuro techniques.

In his paintings, the painter explores the evils of humanity, the violent or amorous passions of men. He was also inspired bymyths and biblical stories and illustrated, in large format, the stories told in the poems of the great masters.

But Louis Boulanger was above all a jack-of-all-trades. Fromwatercolor to lithography to the creation of theater costumes, this multi-talented artist tried his hand at different techniques and genres. His involvement and work helped to create a visual identity for the Romantic drama, and to promote the development of lithography in France. The artist was also known and appreciated for his art of portraiture, and his talent for infusing his subjects with emotion.

The exhibition of the Maison Victor Hugo takes us in the footsteps of this influential painter, from his formative years to his last works, through his travels, his relationship with the Hugo family or his taste for poetry. A complete retrospective, to put back in the spotlight this forgotten painter dreamer.

A beautiful exhibition rich in stories and works, to see without delay!
