Werewolves, vampires, trolls, zombies, demons, Frankenstein's monsters, mermaids and creatures of all kinds populate our imagination. And the cinema has not hesitated to bring them to life, in countless fantasy or horror films. The Art Center of Enghien-les-bains offers us to dive into this unusual world, through an exhibition that honors these strange creatures in art.
From January 13 to March 26, 2023, come and admire the Monstrous Parade, and discover all the secrets of these extraordinary beings. The Art Center reveals what lies behind each monster, while explaining the different ways in which these imaginary beings are portrayed in film and opera.
Costumes, make-up, special effects, masks: according to the centuries and the media, a vampire can have many different styles, and very varied powers. The exhibition shows us the great diversity of the same creature according to the arts. The exhibition also gives us a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes, revealing the secrets of the "monster creators", from costumes to special effects.
The exhibition The Monstrous Parade also deciphers for us the nature of these beings. Desire and passion, fear of death or disease, symbol of Good or Evil, link between Man and Animal: these monsters are the reflection of their time. They symbolize the standards, the anxieties, the hidden desires of the society in which they are born.
If these creatures fascinate us, it is because they are much closer to us than we would like to admit... With this fascinating exhibition, the Art Center allows us to dive entirely into this fantastic universe, and to take an uninhibited interest in this small artistic and folkloric world.
