Exhibition Viva la Bride!: Dresses, Traditions and Contemporary Art at the Arab World Institute

For many, a wedding is the most unforgettable day of their life. To make sure it’s perfect, couples often go all out — sparing no expense and putting in maximum effort. From the dress and flowers to the food, music, dancing, and guests, a wedding encompasses a whole world of customs and traditions, each more intricate than the last.

The Arab World Institute invites us to dive into the world of marriage in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, with an unprecedented exhibition running from September 29, 2026 to February 28, 2027.

This exhibition showcases around forty costumes and pieces dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Never before displayed in France, these outfits highlight wedding traditions from various regions of Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. The event particularly celebrates women: not only the bride, but also the family women and friends who accompany her on this special journey.

The wedding — often referred to as farah ("joy" in Arabic) — is a celebration that is both deeply personal and widely social. This grand festivity marks a significant milestone in life, signaling the start of a new chapter. As such, it is accompanied by a variety of rituals and traditions, which are observed to varying degrees by newer generations.

The IMA exhibition explores nineteenth- and twentieth-century marriages, spotlighting distinctive national and regional Maghrebi features. In contrast to this historical thread, 27 contemporary artists share their take on marriage. These artists (mostly women) express their views on these traditions. Through their subjective, modern gaze, rituals can gain new meaning, be presented as important, or be seen as completely outdated. These enduring traditions shed light on aspects of our current societies and our evolving notions of social roles.

Thus, marriage evolves with time and with people. The exhibition’s route evokes ancient traditions, practices shared across cultures, and unique rituals. In addition to the exceptional costumes highlighted here, visitors can admire heritage objects, archival images, and contemporary creations in a compact yet rich and diverse itinerary.

The exhibition also explores the role of women in these ceremonies: the bride is supported by a host of female allies long before the wedding day. Women take charge of preparing the trousseaux, planning the celebrations, and stand by the bride every step of the way.

The costumes and dresses are lavish and well showcased, and they pleasantly surprise visitors as they enter the exhibit. All around, you gradually discover the traditions surrounding marriage, especially the preparations that lead up to the big day. The captions stay a bit too general: the wall texts touch on the symbolism of henna motifs, the roles of the bride-to-be, the knowledge handed down by mothers... without getting into detail. The route is somewhat short; it’s probably hard to spell out all the traditions followed by the various Maghreb peoples. Still, one would have liked to learn even more about these topics.

The exhibition is striking and engaging, and one would have loved to dive even deeper into this festive, cultural world. The contemporary works fit in remarkably well with the older pieces, broadening the perspectives on marriage. The Arab World Institute offers a pleasant, must-see stroll through this theme starting this autumn.
