You may know his works, but not his name... The Château de Versailles pays tribute to the painter Noël Coypel, with an exhibition to be discovered from September 26, 2023 to January 28, 2024 at the Grand Trianon.

Dôme des Invalides, Parlement de Rennes, Château de Versailles, Louvre, Château de Fontainebleau... Noël Coypel is one of the great painters of the 17th century: his monumental decors embellished, and still adorn, some of France's most famous monuments. Largely unknown today, the artist is back in the spotlight, thanks to the retrospective exhibition"Noël Coypel, peintre de grands décors", organized by the Château de Versailles, from September 26, 2023 to January 28, 2024.

Paintings, drawings, tapestry cartoons and even digital devices: this exhibition allows us to admire Noël Coypel's most important works. We discover many of the decors still visible in the former royal residences, and above all, creations that have now disappeared. In all, more than 80 works are presented in an original and enchanting itinerary.

The exhibition begins at the Grand Trianon, where you can admire the monumental works for which the painter is renowned. Paintings and drawings reveal the artist's talent, his preferred themes, his color palette... Digital devices give us the opportunity to see sets that are impossible to move, such as the painting that adorns the ceiling of the Dôme des Invalides, or the one at the Parlement de Rennes. The exhibition then moves on to the Grand appartement de la Reine at the Château de Versailles. Here, you can discover the work painted on the ceiling of the Salle des Gardes de la Reine. This creation was restored between 2015 and 2017, so it is revealed in all its splendor!

A painter of the classical school, Noël Coypel often depicted stories from Greek mythology and scenes from the Bible. The play of light, the vivid colors and busy compositions often conceal double meanings. Through his many talents, and despite a few enemies, the painter had succeeded in building a solid reputation in the world of classical art.

How about rediscovering this exceptional artist at the Château de Versailles this autumn? The exhibition Noël Coypel, peintre de grands décors is waiting for you!
