Art Brut unveils at the Grand Palais... The cultural institution officially reopens its doors with a series of exhibitions, including Art Brut: Dans l'intimité d'une collection, on view from June 20 to September 21, 2025. Organized in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, this retrospective showcases over 300 works from the Bruno Decharme donation. Through these creations, often produced outside traditional artistic circuits, the exhibition offers a singular exploration of the unsuspected riches ofart brut.
Bruno Decharme, a passionate collector, has devoted forty-five years to bringing together these atypical works. These works, often discovered by chance or thanks to the artists' friends and family, illustrate the creativity of personalities evolving on the bangs of social and cultural norms. "These creations, born outside the recognized art world [...] today constitute an important part of art history", emphasizes a press release from the Grand Palais.
Conceived as a jigsaw puzzle, the exhibition reflects the diversity of themes and approaches inherent in Art Brut. Visitors can immerse themselves in a multitude of forms and expressions, testifying to the human spirit's ability to free itself from convention.
An exhibition we were able to visit. It's very comprehensive, a veritable voyage to the heart of an indefinable art form that doesn't fit into any particular current. The exhibition retraces much of the history of Art Brut through a large selection of works, expressing the artists' personal preoccupations. Fabrics, sculpture, mechanisms, canvases, drawings... A wide range of formats and media to express this direct, almost primal vision of art.
The exhibition also features a virtual reality experience based on the work of American artist Henry Darger, Insider-Outsider, plunging visitors into a sort of "Wonderland" of art brut, where, like Alice, they will have to travel among singular works and other fascinating creatures, while interacting with them. A great experience to discover, in addition to the exhibition.
An opportunity to discover a unique artistic universe, through an exhibition co-produced by the Grand Palais and the Centre Pompidou.
