At just 30 years of age, Tyler Mitchell has already made a name for himself as one of the leading figures of the new generation of American artists. The photographer is particularly interested in the beauty to be found in everyday life, and in self-determination.
The Maison Européenne de la Photographie organizes the artist's first solo exhibition in France: from October 15, 2025 to January 25, 2026, discover this now-ubiquitous creator through the exhibition Wish This Was Real.
Tyler Mitchell stands out for his work on the Black community in the United States: he seeks to show the beauty, strength and power of individuals through colorful portraits and precise, sophisticated stagings. Far from clichés - positive or negative - this artist aims to give a special voice to each subject, so that individuals can reclaim their destiny, their identity.
The photographer also likes to imagine utopian worlds, alternative realities where the universe is happier, more colorful, more human. Here again, the artist plays on the theme of self-determination: in these utopias, everyone is free to reinvent themselves . However, the discerning viewer may find in these invented worlds a commentary on today's society.
This exhibition brings together several series of photographs. The Maison Européenne de la Photographie has structured the exhibition around three themes: Tyler Mitchell's early influences, his quest for identity, and his cultural origins. We then discover his work on landscapes and symbolic universes. The exhibition then focuses on his depictions of the black community, through portraits and elaborate scenes.
Photography fans, don't miss this unique exhibition on an important photographer of the new generation.
