When the name Andy Warhol comes up, most people immediately think of Pop Art, whether it’s his iconic Campbell's Soup Can series or his vibrant portraits of Marilyn Monroe. However, the artist’s creative journey actually began in a different realm—illustration. This early talent and passion for drawing stayed with him throughout his career, and they’re showcased in the upcoming Luxembourg Museum exhibition, running from September 16, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
This exhibition, titled Warhol's Line, shines a spotlight on lesser-known yet equally captivating works. It features 150 drawings, around ten paintings, silkscreens on paper, photographs, archival documents, videos, and scrapbooks. The display is organized into several thematic sections, offering deeper insight into Andy Warhol’s artistic universe.
The Luxembourg Museum showcases over 40 years of drawings and artworks, highlighting both recurring motifs and themes, as well as the evolution of the artist’s style. Visitors can see an early self-portrait from 1942 and sketches in acrylic created just a year before his death. From caricatures and genre scenes to portraits, advertisements, and decorative motifs—Andy Warhol’s prolific output spans a remarkable range of subjects throughout his life.
Although Warhol is primarily celebrated for his paintings, he remained deeply committed to drawing. This medium played a significant role throughout his creative process and career. He experimented freely, blending different influences and tools, manipulating colors and sizes to develop a distinctive style. Through years of practice, he set himself apart from his peers, producing highly graphic works that gained international fame.
Through these drawings, the Luxembourg Museum’s exhibition highlights the creativity and genius of Andy Warhol, an artist who blurs genres and defies boundaries to leave a lasting impression.
