One of the challenges of the week is finding the right time to visit an exhibition. Fortunately, the Musée du Luxembourg offers a nocturne on Monday evenings until 10pm, so you can enjoy the works on offer in a quieter atmosphere, away from the busy hours.
The Musée du Luxembourg is one of France's oldest public museums, founded in 1750. Originally, it was housed in the east wing of the Palais du Luxembourg, to exhibit the "Tableaux du Roi", the works of old masters that made up the royal collection. In 1818, the museum took a modern turn, becoming the first contemporary art museum to exhibit works by living artists.
In 1884, the museum was transferred to the former orangery of the Palais du Luxembourg, giving it the architecture and setting we know today: an elegant building located in the Luxembourg Gardens, in the 6ᵉ arrondissement of Paris. The Musée du Luxembourg has no permanent collections today; it organizes two major exhibitions a year, national or international, around a variety of themes.
