Office hours are not ideal for visiting museums, as they often close around 6pm! And on weekends, the halls are packed, which makes it harder to enjoy the collections. Fortunately, the Musée de Cluny organizes nocturnes on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month, from 6.15pm to 9pm. These evenings offer an opportunity to explore the treasures of the Middle Ages in a more hushed, contemplative atmosphere.
The Musée de Cluny - Musée national du Moyen Âge occupies an exceptional site in the heart of the Quartier Latin, combining the remains of the Gallo-Roman baths of Lutetia and theHôtel des abbés de Cluny, a sumptuous flamboyant Gothic mansion built in the late 15th century for Jacques d'Amboise. Founded in 1843, the museum was the brainchild of Alexandre du Sommerard, a collector of medieval objects, all of which were acquired by the State after his death. It became France's first museum devoted to the art of the Middle Ages, bringing together sculptures, stained glass, ivories, enamels, silverware and tapestries.
The tour has been completely redesigned around a chronological progression, from Late Antiquity to the end of the 15th century, with a modernized scenography and a new reception area accessible to all. Among the museum's treasures is the famous tapestry of "The Lady and the Unicorn", an emblematic masterpiece of medieval art.
