Roger Caillois was a writer, philosopher, sociologist and literary critic. He was friends with many of the great artists of his time, such as Salvador Dali, Louis Aragon, Paul Éluard... But he was also passionate about stones, so much so that Marguerite Yourcenar called him"the man who loved stones".
It's this side of Roger Caillois that theEcole des Arts Joailliers honors , with a brand-new exhibition to be discovered from November 6, 2025 to March 29, 2026. The exhibition - free of charge and accessible by reservation - is a retrospective dedicated to the writer and enthusiast.
Organized in partnership with the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, the exhibition Rêveries de pierres: Poésie et minéraux de Roger Caillois brings together nearly 200 minerals from Roger Caillois's private collection, as well as a selection of publishedwritings on stones, recognized in the art world.
Over the course of his life, this lover of stones built up a collection of over a thousand minerals. Now housed at the Muséum National, the collection includes colorful and interesting pieces from all over the world. For over 25 years, Roger Caillois studied and collected these stones with scientific rigor. This singular love led him to write several essays, including his most famous book, L'Écriture des pierres.
The Ecole des Arts Joailliers unveils an atypical exhibition: we discover a serious and respected man, an academician, who was driven by an intense passion for minerals. The stones on display and the writings of the man of letters highlight the special place these minerals occupied in the mind and heart of man. In an ever-changing world, Roger Caillois saw a singular and eternal beauty in these stones, in the shapes and colors formed in the depths of the Earth.
The exhibition is free of charge, but accessible by reservation only. Ticket sales are due to open in October.
