The painter Jean-Jacques Henner pays tribute to his family in a series of portraits: discover these works from September 16, 2026 to January 4, 2027 in an unprecedented exhibition.

Born into a farming family in Alsace, Jean-Jacques Henner was always encouraged and protected by his relatives, allowing him to develop his talent for painting. After his father’s death when he was 14, his brothers offered especially steadfast support, looking after their younger sibling. Throughout his life, Henner kept a deep affection for his family and maintained close, lasting bonds with them.

That love shows up in the artist's drawings and paintings. The Jean-Jacques Henner Museum presents an exhibition that sheds light on the painter’s ties to his family. Through around twenty portraits, paintings, and drawings, visitors can discover the Henner family and the love that united them.

From September 16, 2026 to January 4, 2027, the Jean-Jacques Henner Museum invites us to admire Portraits de famille, a compact exhibition that both sheds light on the painter's private life and showcases the evolution of his style and techniques.

Indeed, Jean‑Jacques Henner first painted his brother Séraphin at the age of 16. But that would not be the last: Séraphin would appear in the artist’s work 24 times over his lifetime. Across a 40-year career, Henner created numerous portraits of his brothers, their wives, his nephews and nieces, and his mother Madeleine...

The exhibition offers on-site sketches, candid glimpses of daily life, and more meticulously crafted portraits. As the works unfold, the painter’s gaze sharpens, his style evolves, growing more assured and nuanced. Fans of the Alsatian artist will find this concise show rewarding, as it pulls us into the intimate.
