The Bourdelle Museum is devoting Art Is a Game to André Derain. Paintings, sculptures, ceramics and works for the stage shed light on the many experiments of this Fauvism and Cubism figure.

A career to look beyond painting: with André Derain: Art Is a Game, the Bourdelle Museum explores the techniques and materials the artist experimented with.

A leading figure of Fauvism and Cubism, André Derain also sculpted stone, clay and metal, carved wood, designed theater sets and costumes, and worked in polychrome ceramics. This diversity provides the exhibition’s guiding thread: play is seen as a driving force of creation, between experimentation and imitation.

The exhibition traces the stages of his career while giving center stage to his sculpture. It places his work alongside creations by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, highlighting the encounters, affinities and rivalries that shaped his work.

His borrowings from African, Oceanic and folk art also shed light on how he renewed artistic forms. The exhibition thus offers a chance to explore lesser-known aspects of his output, without reducing it to the paintings associated with his early career.

The project is being carried out with the Troyes Museum of Modern Art, Pierre and Denise Lévy National Collections, and with the exceptional participation of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
