Dan Flavin at Le Bourget: Nine Light Works Brought Together at Gagosian

The Gagosian gallery in Le Bourget brings together the nine works in European Couples, a series by Dan Flavin that transforms space through light and color. Fluorescent tubes, open squares and an installation to experience as a whole.

A yellow square, another in red, green or blue lights spreading across the walls: Dan Flavin works with color using fluorescent tubes. Gagosian’s Le Bourget gallery brings together the nine works in his European Couples series.

Designed between 1966 and 1971, these works share the same form: an open square measuring 2.44 meters on each side, installed in the corner of a room. Each work casts a different color. The light extends beyond the tubes, altering the perception of the walls and the space around them.

The titles pay tribute to couples close to Flavin. Bringing the series together makes it possible to discover these nine dedications as a group, rather than approaching the works as isolated objects.

The exhibition continues with six works devoted to painters Charlotte and Jim Brooks. They form a luminous line more than fifteen meters long in an adjoining space. Two paintings by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a landscape and a night scene, complete the display and offer another approach to color.
