The Osmothèque of Versailles and the Espace Richaud take us into a world of craftsmanship and elegance with the exhibition The Soul of French Perfume, on view from November 4, 2026 to February 7, 2027.

The art of perfumery is ancient, intricate, and shrouded in mystery. The Osmothèque in Versailles, in partnership with the espace Richaud, lifts the veil on some of the secrets of this millennia-old craft, in which France has distinguished itself in particular. From November 4, 2026 to February 7, 2027, discover the exhibition The Soul of French Perfume: A Journey to the Heart of Elegance and Craft.

This historical exhibition takes visitors back 2,000 years, exploring the rituals and beliefs surrounding perfumes in antiquity. Offerings to the gods, medicinal virtues, fragrances for the wealthy and powerful: perfume fulfilled multiple roles. Over the centuries, the place and functions of perfumes have evolved.

The exhibition route traces the scents of royal and imperial courts, the rise of this know-how in France and the country’s growing influence in the global perfumery scene, the arrival of organic chemistry in the 19th century, or the golden age of perfume in the 20th century, its ties to the worlds of luxury and fashion...

Perfumes are examined from every angle. L'Osmothèque and the Richaud space focus in particular on how the fragrance industry developed in France. Some regions specialized in cultivating scent-bearing plants, such as Grasse. The master perfumers built their craft, backed by major houses like Lubin, Houbigant, Guerlain, Caron, Coty... Then, couturiers seized this know-how, weaving fragrances into the world of fashion and haute couture. Chanel, Paul Poiret, or Jean Patou created iconic scents that became a brand's identity in their own right.

To support the transformation of perfume into a luxury product, the master glassmakers were also brought in. Houses such as Lalique or Baccarat imagined very elaborate bottles, real works of art that are on display.

The exhibition invites us into a world bigger than it looks, where chemistry, fashion, craft, and agriculture come together. At every link in the chain, workers put long-standing knowledge and know-how into action. It is this rich and captivating heritage that is spotlighted throughout this exhibition route.
