Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is one of Paris' hidden treasures. One of the capital's oldest parish churches, it's well worth a visit.

Saint-Pierre Church is one of the many gems tucked into the Montmartre hill. Built in 1134, it ranks among the oldest parish churches in Paris. Designated as a historic monuments since 1923, its architecture has evolved considerably since its founding. Not to mention, its history has been full of twists and turns.

In the past, this church was replaced by a Merovingian basilica built in honor of Saint-Denis. Today, five original capitals and four marble columns, the remains of an ancient temple, can still be admired. King Louis VI, known as Louis le Gros, began building this Romanesque church in 1133. At the end of the 12th century, the apse was rebuilt, this time in early Gothic style.

Following the Hundred Years' War, the church was damaged and underwent numerous repairs that added new architecture. The nave and transept cross are in the flamboyant Gothic style. These numerous renovations contributed to the surprising architecture of this building.

Another notable aspect of this church is that, for a period, it functioned as both a parish church and an abbey church. Today, it remains a major hub of Christian spirituality in the capital.

And for music lovers, its organ has finally been restored, and its historic monument status is preserved on its case. Built in 1868, the grand organ of Saint-Pierre Church in Montmartre was crafted by the renowned organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The restoration was carried out by the City of Paris’ Department of Religious and Historical Edifices.
