The Paris region is certainly rich in discoveries, and the curiosities of our heritage never cease to amaze us. Did you know, for example, that there is an astonishing bell tower nicknamed the "Leaning Tower of the North," in reference to the famous Italian leaning tower? Yes, all you need is a Navigo pass to visit this unusual monument located in the town of Étampes, south of Paris in the Essonne department.
You can discover it on the site of the former collegiate church of Saint-Martin d'Étampes. This church, a cross between the early and flamboyant Gothic styles, was built between 1142 and 1170, making it an important vestige of the medieval period. However, its bell tower was erected almost four centuries later, in 1530. Contrary to what one might think, it did not succumb to the ravages of time: during its construction, even before it was completed, a settling of the ground caused the tower to lean to the west.
Several hundred years later, this slightly dizzying tilt can still be seen from the side of the church. Now classified as a historic monument, this church still hosts religious ceremonies. If you wish to visit it, please remember to respect the tranquility of the place.
