The Domaine de Sceaux, a historic jewel on the outskirts of Paris, combines château, museum, gardens designed by Le Nôtre and cultural events. A must-see for art, history and nature lovers.

A château to discover just outside Paris

Completely renovated in 2020 using the skills of France's finest craftsmen, the Château de Sceauxdepartmental museum traces the history of its illustrious owners - the Colbert family, the Duke and Duchess of Maine, the Duke of Penthièvre and the Treviso family - through an anthology of masterpieces evoking the French art of living from Louis XIV to Napoleon III.

The tour continues at the Pavillon de l'Aurore, the jewel in the crown of the Domaine de Sceaux, which features a vast allegoricalpainting by Charles Le Brun dating from 1672.

Opened for special occasions, the Orangerie, built in 1686 by Jules Hardouin Mansart , now houses a collection of sculptures and copies of 17th-century Antiquesthat used to line the park. The Petit-Château, built to house Colbert's guests , is also one of the outbuildings, preserved in its pure classical style and listed as a historicmonument.

An estate steeped in history

Created in 1670 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, the Domaine de Sceaux benefited from the expertise of the greatest artists of its time: André Le Nôtre, designer of the French gardens, Charles Le Brun, the king's first painter, Antoine Coysevox, François Girardon and Jean-Baptiste Théodon, renowned sculptors.

At the turn of the18thcentury, the estate became the property of the Duke and Duchess of Maine, who held sumptuous receptions there, known as the "Grandes Nuits de Sceaux". After the French Revolution, the château was dismantled and entirely rebuilt in the 19th century by the Duke and Duchess of Treviso. In 1923,the estate became part of the public heritage of the Département de la Seine, which embarked on an ambitious restoration campaign.

Unique collections that bear witness to the history of the Île-de-France region

The Château de Sceaux presents a rich collection evoking the French art of living from Louis XIV to Napoleon III. Major paintings by François de Troy, François Boucher, Hubert Robert and many others stand alongside precious and historic furniture, as well as a vast array of objets d'art, including a major collection of ceramics from the17th to20th centuries, bringing the museum's inventory to some 15,000 items. Every year, the Département acquires new works linked to the history of Sceaux, thus pursuing its mission of passing on itsheritage.

An exceptionalpark reflecting the genius of Le Nôtre

Created by André Le Nôtre, the Parc de Sceaux covers180 hectares of water basins, waterfalls, statues, spectacular perspectives, large accessible lawns and undergrowth. It has been awarded the Jardin remarquable and Espace végétal écologique labels.

The park also offers dedicated areas for visitors: playgrounds, a Guignol theater, canals and gourmet kiosks. A new on-site catering service will be available at the end of 2025 near the Château , and in 2027 in the remarkable Hanover Pavilion.

A leading cultural and tourist site

The jewel in the crown of the Hauts-de-Seine region's cultural heritage , the Domaine de Sceaux is a popular walking destination for the people of the Paris region. It offers a rich and varied program of events throughout the year. The Japanese festival of Hanami, when the century-old pink cherry trees blossom , attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.

The Département des Hauts-de-Seine designs several temporary exhibitions a year , highlighting themes linked to the history of French art from the 17th to the20th century. Each year, an open-air photography exhibition showcases the rich heritage of the Hauts-de-Seine region.

The château and park are also the setting for concerts and festivals, ranging from Baroque music to contemporary shows , in majestic settings such as the Orangerie and the château's historic salons.

Guided tours and educational workshops are offered every weekend and during school vacations for the whole family (investigations, games, storytelling or themed tours, hands-on workshops, etc.), as well as every day of the year for tourist groups.
