Originally serving as a simple hunting lodge, built by Louis VII around 1150 within the Vincennes Forest, the Château de Vincennes evolved over the centuries into a stately manor commissioned by Philippe Auguste and Saint Louis. By 1337, King Philip VI of Valois decided to strengthen the site by constructing a donjon to the west of the manor. Standing at 52 meters tall, it remains the largest medieval fortress in Europe.
This medieval castle, renowned for its role as a royal residence in the 14th century, has served as a prison from the 16th to the 19th centuries: notable figures such as Fouquet, Marquis de Sade, and Mirabeau were held here. Converted into a barracks under Napoleon I, the fortress was built to defend Paris and remains the headquarters of the Department of Defense’s Historical Service today. Visitors can still explore the King’s Apartments, the Sainte-Chapelle, and even the upper levels of the Keep!
Sainte-Chapelle was built in 1379, modeled on the Sainte-Chapelle of the Palais de la Cité in Paris. It, however, has only one level, but the sculptures on the west portal stand as a fine testament to 15th‑century art. Since 1988, a major renovation program has been undertaken at the château de Vincennes.
Today, the site hosts a wide range of events to bring this history-soaked place to life. Concerts, guided tours, live performances... Every opportunity to (re)discover this imposing monument, at the heart of Paris's history!
