It's one of the capital's most symbolic monuments, and one of the finest treasures of the medieval era in Paris. The Notre-Dame Cathedral stands in the middle of the City of Light, and for many centuries has dominated the capital, seeing it through the ages. Built between 1163 and 1345, it is one of the few remaining vestiges of the Middle Ages in Paris, and has inspired many artists, most notably Victor Hugo. His novel Notre-Dame de Paris has been reinterpreted by Walt Disney Studios and even in a hit musical.
Notre-Dame Cathedral is also steeped in mystery and legend. There's no end to the fascination we have for this monument, and following the fire of 2019, which caused the heaviest damage to the edifice since its construction, the reopening is eagerly awaited. In the meantime, events and exhibitions have been organized to help us rediscover the history and folklore surrounding Notre-Dame de Paris. Find out more about what's on and what's coming up for a dive into the cathedral's secrets.
