On the site where the Medrano circus once stood, in the Pigalle district of the 9th arrondissement, a fresco pays tribute to this circus heritage worthy of the capital's greatest shows. Created by artists Audrey Feuillet and Oscilia Glé in 2019 (with the help of the Conseil Municipal des Enfants), the Cirque de la Fraternité is a graphic fresco that depicts the world of the circus in an idealized way, in a big top where men and animals live (almost) in harmony.
In 1873, Circus Fernando was founded here, later to become Circus Medrano and then Circus de Montmartre. At the time, it was run by the famous Joseph Bouglione: indeed, his descendants, the famous Bouglione family, are still one of the most influential families in the French circus world today. It was also here that the greatest stars of the day - the Fratellinis, Buster Keaton, Fernand Raynaud, Achille Zavatta, Django Reinhardt... - performed. performed here.
So, to discover this large-scale fresco where men and animals put on a frozen show, go to 70 and 72 rue des Martyrs, in the 9th arrondissement!
