Berbers from around the globe are gearing up to celebrate the Berber New Year 2026, commonly known as Yennayer, on January 12, 2026. It’s a time to come together with loved ones, in good cheer and conviviality, to welcome the year 2976 of the agricultural calendar in fitting style!
Yennayer is the celebration of Amnar, the god of the Saints in Berber mythology, akin to Janus—the Roman deity associated with gates and new beginnings. The festivities span three days, encompassing preparations, feasting, and the opening of the new year. An ancient tradition, it is celebrated worldwide wherever Berber communities reside, and it has recently experienced a resurgence of interest. This renewed enthusiasm is driven and invigorated by the recognition of Tamazight as an official language in several countries, including Algeria, Libya, Niger, and Morocco.
In France, almost every family celebrates Yennayer, which has become a key event shaping their social and civic life. The Berber language is also among the most widely spoken languages in the country!
Additionally, to celebrate the 2026 Amazigh New Year, a grand will take place on January 10, 2026, through the 19th and 20th arrondissement organized by the Kabylie Equitable Association. Now in its third year, this lively carnival parade through the streets of Paris promises to be a vibrant celebration—rich in culture, cheerful, family-friendly, and welcoming to all.
The walk will start at 2:30 p.m. from Place Roger Madec (formerly known as Armand Carrel Square), before heading along Rue Manin, Avenue Simon Bolivar, Rue des Pyrénées, and Rue Vitruve, arriving at Place de la Réunion around 4:30 p.m.. Berbers and curious onlookers alike are invited to join this friendly event as we welcome the New Year together!
