78th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris: discover the program of the ceremonies

Every year in August, Paris celebrates its Liberation. This August 25, 2022, the city commemorates the 78th anniversary of its Liberation, in 1944. A historic event a lot of us only saw in video or picture. So, the Paris City Hall encourages all Parisians to gather on places of commemoration in memory of the first members of the Resistance, like the Musée de la Libération.

From August 19 to 25, 1944, Paris was finally liberated from German occupation. It was the triumph of the Allies and fighting France, and the establishment of General de Gaulle as leader of a liberated and victorious France. [Read more]

On August 24 and 25, 2022, the City of Paris is also to celebrate this anniversary with traditional ceremonies. On the menu? Stories, a speech delivered by Anne Hidalgo, and the inauguration of an exhibition are expected on Wednesday at the Jardin des Combattants de la Nueve. On Thursday, you are all expected on the parvis of the Hotel de Ville to discover the ceremonial drill, tributes to the dead and reading of texts.

  • 5:30 p.m.: association 24 août 1944’s guests gathering
  • 6 p.m.: testimonies and speeches by Paris Mayor and floral offering
  • 7 p.m.: inauguration of the “Visages d'exil, 1939-2019” exhibition at the Halle des Blancs Manteaux (Downtown Paris)

August 25, 2022’s program in front of the City Hall

  • 5 p.m.: Opening to the public and regular arrival of the speakers
  • 5:45 p.m.: Ceremonial drill and troop inspection
  • 5:55 p.m.: In Memoriam – Tribute to the dead since August 25, 2021. As photographs will be shown, Paris firefighter M. Pierrick Barbier, pompier de Paris will perform bagpipe music.
  • 6 p.m.: Beginning of the historic allusion themed on the 80th anniversary of the Vel d’Hiv raid and the year 1942. This evocation will come along with videos played on the giant screen and a reading of evocative texts.
  • 6:55 p.m.: End of speeches
  • 7:10 p.m.: End of ceremony
