The perfect moment to discover Vincenzo Bellini’s very first masterpiece… Paris Opéra Garnier offers two exclusive performances of the first success of Norma composer, Il Pirata on December 16 and 19, 2019. A work which lead part has been entirely created for French soprano Henriette Méric-Lalande in 1826.
The story of this opera takes place in the 13th century, in Sicily. It’s about the chief of a band of pirates Gualtiero in love with Imogene who is forced to marry Ernesto to save her father’s life. As for Ernesto, he’s the one who chased Gualtiero from his lands. A very complicated love triangle and a rare work performed here as a concert version.
A libretto written by Felice Romani inspired by Charles Robert Maturin’s play Bertram or The Castle of St. Aldobrand. And an opera that managed to bring renown sopranos to the role of Imogene such as Maria Callas or even Monteserrat Caballé so that they paved the way to the most Verdi-like sopranos of her generation Sondra Radvanovsky. Let’s book a ticket, friends, shall we?
