The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days ) is a not-to-be-missed event for art and history enthusiasts, as well as for curious visitors thirsting for new experiences and discoveries. Once a year, on the third weekend in September, this not-to-be-missed event invites us to discover our heritage in a whole new light.
The cultural institutions, among them museums, monuments and castles, naturally rise to the challenge, but you can also enjoy exceptional tours inside ministries, embassies or even major institutions. During this special weekend, kids and grown-ups benefit from visits, often free, with unique activities and creative workshops that let everyone find a program worthy of their passion or curiosity.
The heritage isn’t just about tangible assets; it’s also a craft and savoir-faire. If you’re passionate about handicrafts and fascinated by the processes behind creation, you won’t want to miss Heritage Days to dive into the world of artisans. Indeed, on this occasion you can glimpse the behind-the-scenes of these captivating trades, with some workshops opening their doors to the public. This is especially true in Paris, at the Houdart Workshop, which will reveal the secrets of its precious bindings and the art of gilding this weekend of September 19-20, 2026.
Houdart Bindery Opens Its Doors
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Houdart Bookbindery opens its doors to reveal an exceptional artisanal craft. During a guided tour, visitors will trace the main steps of binding and gilding, while discovering how traditionally and contemporarily crafted bindings are made.
The workshop designs and produces entirely bespoke works, whether it’s restoring an old volume, creating an art binding, or turning a new idea into a finished project. From a concept, a manuscript, a digital file, or digital prints, every piece is conceived and shaped to the client’s wishes, with respect for traditional techniques and a keen attention to materials, finishes, and personalization.
Participation conditions: Visits are limited to 15 people and must be booked in advance at the following times: 10:00, 11:30, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00. Free of charge | Reservation required - houdart@relicentre.fr
