Summer getaways are in full swing this weekend, July 3–5, 2026, as schools kick off their holidays. In Île-de-France, Bison Futé is raising the red flag for outbound traffic on Friday and Saturday, while the national level remains orange. Here are the forecasts and tips to help you start your holidays without a hitch.
This first summer getaway is shaping traffic on the country's major arteries, as holidaymakers race to see the sights before the crowds, joined by drivers from neighboring countries. Unsurprisingly, the Île-de-France region, the transit hub to the Atlantic, the Southeast and Normandy, bears the brunt of the difficulties.
The Friday of July 3 is rated red for departures in Île-de-France and orange across the rest of the country. By late morning, traffic surges toward the toll booths on the A10 and A6 motorways, where the first slowdowns are expected.
In the mid-afternoon, the buildup on these two corridors, combined with the usual Parisian commuting flows, could yield persistent congestion through the evening. The A13 motorway, headed toward Normandy, is also expected to slow down from mid-afternoon.
Bison Futé therefore recommends that you leave or cross Île-de-France before 10 a.m. or after 11 p.m. this Friday. Here are the other travel tips for departures today:
Traffic outlook: nationally the day remains green, but there will be heavy flows in the North and the Northwest from early afternoon through early evening. Motorists are advised to avoid the A1 motorway between Lille and Paris from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the A22 from Belgium to Lille from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the A2 from Belgium to the junction with the A1 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., the A21 between Lens and Denain from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the A83 between Niort and Nantes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the N165 national road between Nantes and Quimper from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Saturday, July 4 remains classified red in Île-de-France, as well as in the North and the Northwest, still signaling outbound travel. Congestion is expected to start early in the morning, especially on the A10 and, to a lesser extent, on the A6, before picking up mid-morning and lasting until mid-afternoon. The A13 will also be heavily used from mid-morning.
For this Saturday, the advice is radical: leave or cross Île-de-France before 5 a.m. or after 4 p.m. The other recommendations favor departures:
Good news for those returning home: traffic in the return direction is rated green across the entire country this Saturday.
Sunday, July 5 is shaping up to be more travel-friendly, with a green rating nationwide. Only the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region shifts to orange, with expected congestion from mid-afternoon to early evening. Drivers are advised to avoid the A7 between Lyon and Orange from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Mont-Blanc tunnel (N205) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as the A46 and the departmental road 346 for the east Lyon bypass from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Traffic in the Île-de-France region is heading back to orange: on the A10 and A6 motorways, expect notably heavy conditions from mid-afternoon through to the end of the evening. The A13 is also likely to be congested from mid-afternoon into late evening. Bison Futé recommends to join or pass through the region before 3 p.m. or after 11 p.m.
Before you get behind the wheel, drivers are advised to check the detailed forecasts on the Bison Futé site and monitor real-time traffic in Île-de-France on Sytadin. Radio 107.7 FM also remains a valuable ally for the highway network.
Also plan ahead for your trips to the stations and airports: public transport in Île-de-France is facing disruptions this week, as summer works affect the metro, the RER and Transilien lines.
Finally, on the road as in life, a few summer must-dos are in order: take a break every two hours, stay hydrated, swap drivers if you can, and keep your attention sharp behind the wheel. Anticipation remains the watchword for this first major getaway weekend: choosing the right time can save you hours in traffic. Safe travels and happy holidays 2026!
