A very surprising birth at the Menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes! If the announcement of the arrival of a small tree kangaroo dates from January 30, 2023, the mother would have in fact given birth in July 2022 and the baby would have remained hidden since then, well warm in its small pocket! This is very good news for this threatened species, also called"Goodfellow's dendrolague", which now knows one more individual.
By coming to the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes, you can now come to observe this small animal, if you are lucky enough that it takes the head out of its pocket, where it sucks the nourishing teats of its mother to grow. The mother, Kau Kau, has had three cubs before. Animal keepers knew the cub was there when a paw was spotted in mid-December, and then when it popped its head out for the first time as the New Year approached.
The baby will stay in the pouch for a few more weeks, before switching to his vegetarian diet of vegetables and foliage. He will also learn to move around to discover his life as a tree kangaroo, in a wooden space, made for these skilled climbers with powerful legs. Endemic species of Papua New Guinea, the species classified"endangered", normally lives in mountain forests.
Don't miss it, because it will have to leave the park before its second year, in order to meet other kangaroos and to help in its turn to the conservation of the species!
