The start of the day was particularly challenging for public transportation in Paris and Île-de-France this Tuesday, January 6, 2026. After two weeks of Christmas break, the recovery was underway amid snow and ice, with major disruptions right from the early hours. Four centimeters of snow fell in Paris on Monday, causing record traffic jams of 1,020 kilometers by late afternoon. The freezing temperatures, ranging from -7 to -3 degrees Celsius, turned the roads into icy skating rinks, prompting several bus networks to halt services. The RATP and SNCF operated trains overnight to prevent freezing on the tracks. In an update issued at 7 a.m. this Tuesday, the RATP reports that all metro, RER, and tram lines are operating normally, but only about thirty bus routes are currently running. Here’s an overview of the situation.
On the Paris metro network, only one line will be affected this week:
On the tramway front, unfortunately, prolonged disruptions persist:
According to a statement from Île-de-France Mobilités, "if the snow persists overnight, significant disruptions are expected, mainly affecting transportation that relies on the road network."
Some 1,900 bus and coach lines across Île-de-France could face significant disruptions or even come to a halt entirely. IDFM has indicated that decisions will be made based on actual traffic conditions to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers. As of this Tuesday afternoon, the network is operating at over 85% capacity.
In the outer suburbs, the decision is already clear: school transportation will not be provided due to prefectural orders.
Once the weather disturbances subside, the RER will resume its scheduled evening operations:
The Transilien network is experiencing significant disruptions this week due to overnight maintenance work on almost all lines:
Another challenging day is expected in Île-de-France this Wednesday. Commuters are advised to limit their travel and check traffic conditions before heading out, as the region remains under orange alert. While the metro, RER, and tram services are operating normally thanks to proactive measures by RATP, the bus network will face significant disruptions, with many routes halted in the suburbs. Be sure to consult the apps Bonjour RATP and SNCF Connect for real-time updates, as conditions are changing hour by hour. Bus services are expected to gradually resume as road conditions improve. For the rest of the week, scheduled maintenance work mostly causes evening disruptions after 8 p.m.
In brief, the week from January 5 to 11, 2026, will be remembered for a notably challenging return to school and work amidst snowfall across the Paris region. The RATP and SNCF are continuing their scheduled maintenance works, including complete closures of the Transilien Line U each evening for nearly a month, and the Line 12 metro line on Sunday night. If you need to travel late into the night, consider using the Noctilien night bus lines. Best of luck navigating this turbulent start to the year!
