Due to major modernization work, Île-de-France Mobilités has announced the closure of the Gare de l'Est in Paris for two weekends in May. So, when will the Gare de l'Est be closed to travelers and what are the alternative routes to get around during these two weekends? We tell you everything.

More bad news for users of public transport in Paris and the Ile-de-France. While line 1 of the metro will be partially interrupted during the week of May 15, the Gare de l'Est will be closed to passengers for two weekends in May 2023.

In a press release published on May 10, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) announced the closure of the Gare de Paris-Est station on the weekends of May 13 and 14 , and then on the Pentecost weekend, May 27, 28 and 29. " On the weekends of May 13 & 14 and May 27 to 29, 2023 (Monday, May 29 being a holiday), the Gare de l'Est will be closed due to work carried out by SNCF Réseau," writes IDFM on its website. The Haussmann and Magenta stations are also affected. Thus, traffic will be disrupted on two lines of Ile-de-France transport: line P and RER E.

On the Transilien website, it is specified that traffic will be greatly reduced on line P on May 13 and 14. As a result, no trains will be running between Paris Est and Vaires Torcy (Paris - Meaux / Château-Thierry route) and between Paris Est and Les Yvris Noisy-le-Grand (Paris - Coulommiers and Provins routes).

Same complications on the RER E, where traffic will be heavily reduced this weekend of May 13 and 14 with 1 train per hour between Coulommiers and Les Yvris Noisy-le-Grand via Tournan and 8 round trips scheduled during the day between Provins and Gretz-Armainvilliers.

" No trains between Haussmann Saint-Lazare and Chelles Gournay and between Haussmann Saint-Lazare and Les Yvris Noisy-le-Grand," says Transilien.

On the weekend of May 27, 28 and 29 (May 27 and 28 all day and May 29 until 12:00), Haussmann Saint-Lazare and Magenta stations will not be served in both directions.

This " major modernization work " is intended to enable " progress to be made on the summer network transformation projects while limiting the impact on passengers' daily lives," explains Île-de-France Mobilités.

For example, on the weekend of May 13 and 14, SNCF Réseau will be carrying out " tests on the entire future signalling system in conjunction with a new single command center ", which will eventually make it possible to " manage 3,000 trains on the east-west axis of Ile-de-France transport ".

On the weekend of May 27 to 29, 2023, SNCF Réseau will replace " 13 kilometers of modernized rails " on RER line E and Transilien line P between Gare de l'Est and Noisy-le-Sec.

But how will passengers be able to get around during the closure of Gare de l'Est? While Île-de-France Mobilités recommends that users avoid travel during these two weekends of closure, the agency has revealed some alternative routes.

For example, IDFM advises travelers to take metro lines 3, 5 and 9, RER A and B, and Transilien line R. Note that it will also be possible to take regular bus lines as well as exceptional replacement lines set up for the occasion. To discover the alternative routes, please consult the IDFM platform.
