There's no shortage of monumental murals in the Paris region. In Paris, of course, there are those in the 13th arrondissement, by Obey, Seth and Inti. Elsewhere in the Ile-de-France region, there are also a number of immense urban creations. Recently, Alexandre Monteiro, better known asHopare, created a mural to mark the 150th anniversary of Impressionism. It covers the monumental 317 m² gable of the Toit et Joie - Poste Habitat residence in Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise.
As the year draws to a close, another urban artist is making a splash, creating the world's largest Nelson Mandela mural! At 44 meters high, this impressive fresco is also the street artist's biggest project to date. So, who is it, and where should you go to admire it?
The artist behind this monumental fresco is Rast. At the age of 14, this artist from Saint-Cyr-l'École in the Yvelines began painting, initially focusing on graffiti and lettering. Over the past ten years, Rast has turned his attention to portraiture, combining realism and vivid colors.
But Rast 's speciality lies in the creation of sublime and fascinating mechanical works. Thanks to an ingenious combination of electric motors and renewable energy, Rast's innovative mechanized murals come to life before the admiring eyes of passers-by.
Rast is now behind the world's largest mural dedicated to Nelson Mandela! To honor the memory of this historic politician and symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle, Rast chose to depict him with his fist raised, the leader's emblematic posture.
This immense work now covers the entire 240 m² façade of the Créteil Habitat building, located at N°2 place de l'Abbaye in Créteil, Val-de-Marne. With its monumental size (44m x 8m), Rast's fresco is even more impressive than that of Shepard Fairey (Obey), created in 2014 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
And Rast doesn't intend to stop there! On his social networks, the street artist announces that a mechanical installation is planned for this huge fresco!
