What does the Kaldea Identité exhibition at Passage Choiseul have to offer?

The location itself speaks volumes about the project's ambitions. Nestled in 12 Passage Choiseul, the Cinko Space is a former 200-square-meter printing press that has been transformed into a reconstructed Japan. The space now features sakura blossoms, paper lanterns, and a traditional Japanese boutique. This covered passageway on the second floor, just steps from Rue Sainte-Anne—often called Little Tokyo for its cluster of Japanese restaurants—creates the perfect setting for an . This installation, designed by the gallery, seamlessly merges with the artist's work to offer visitors a truly immersive experience.

Kaldea is a French street artist whose career is as vibrant and dynamic as the worlds she depicts. Starting out on canvas as a teenager, she expanded into large-scale works in 2011, painting containers and façades across Germany before earning her place on the international urban art scene. Her work has taken her from London to Bangkok, passing through Zagreb, Munich, and Lisbon. Her instantly recognizable style blends Art Deco, futuristic, and Asian influences, with a luminous color palette designed to evoke an emotional response at first glance. It’s been several years since she last held a solo exhibition in Paris, so this show feels especially significant and eventful.

What to See at the Kaldea "Identity" Exhibition?

The exhibit features around forty works arranged into five thematic narratives that guide visitors from the vulnerability of the human condition to its eventual restoration:

  • Fragile Fury: Porcelain animal figures that explore cracks as a metaphor for personal wounds and resilience.

  • Altered Identities: Faces that fracture and split, oscillating between masks, halos, and digital glitches, delving into what we reveal and what we hide about ourselves.

  • Reinterpreted Japanese Pop Culture: Godzilla, Doraemon, Hello Kitty, Pikachu... Iconic figures of manga culture reimagined as modern mythological protectors, reflecting on the growing influence of digital technology and artificial intelligence in our lives.

  • Japanese Mythology and Symbols Revisited: Spirits and creatures from Shintoism, approached with a contemporary and poetic sensibility.

  • Mecha: Body/Armor: The culmination of the exhibition, where armor symbolizes both reconstruction and raises questions about the future of humanity in the face of machines.

What else can visitors explore during this exhibition?

Beyond the artworks, the exhibition features an Art Shop offering limited-edition creations inspired by Japanese folk art, reimagined by Kaldea: exclusive art toys with ultra-limited editions and cute goodies specially designed for the event. For the lucky few, a game of chance inspired by Tokyo’s traditions provides a chance to access a mysterious secret room, open to very small groups — a playful touch that elevates this visit into a truly unique experience.

Behind this project are Julien and Sophie Roussard, leaders of a gallery established in 1948 that has been a pioneer in promoting French street art. Since 2023, the gallery has adopted a mobile approach, setting up in unconventional venues around the capital, such as the crypt of the Église de la Madeleine or La Poste du Louvre. Their work is also accessible online at frenchartcollection.com.

Who is it for? Urban art enthusiasts, fans of Japanese culture, leisurely walkers in the 2nd arrondissement, and families (especially children who love manga are welcome). With free admission, it’s a perfect spot for an effortless cultural break.
