To mark International Women's Rights Day on March 8 each year, many venues are offering a feminist and festive program to continue the fight and raise awareness among as many people as possible. Near Les Lilas, in the Seine-Saint-Denis département, a memorial dedicated to women in resistance and deportation is due for completion in 2025. On Saturday, March 8, 2025, a ceremony will be held here to pay tribute to women who fought in the Resistance and were deported.
As a reminder, Fort de Romainville is a military structure built to protect the Parisian capital in the 19th century, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. During the Second World War, and especially during the Nazi occupation of France, the Fort de Romainville served as an internment camp for deportees before their transfer to concentration and extermination camps. The camp is known for having mainly housed women involved in the French Resistance, and this memorial pays tribute to them decades later.
In homage to these women Resistance fighters deported under the Occupation, a ceremony will be held in front of the Fort de Romainville on Saturday March 8 at 10:30 a.m., in the presence of local elected representatives. The ceremony will also include a presentation of the Memorial project and its off-site program for 2025.
