If you're lucky enough to have access to a small green space in Paris or the Île-de-France region, the Garden Bird Observatory is counting on you! This French citizen science initiative invites enthusiasts to assist with the survey of the birds you spot around your home, on January 24 and 25, 2026. No need to be an expert on bird species—simply use the identification sheets provided by the Observatory and submit your observations online through their platform.
You can thus contribute to the scientific monitoring of the most common species through this large-scale count, organized twice a year in January and May by the LPO and the National Museum of Natural History. It's an excellent opportunity to observe and compare their behaviors and populations during two distinct periods: wintering and breeding. Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy some time outdoors, alone or with others, whether in your garden, on your balcony, or at a public park.
Once you've selected your observation spot, identify the birds you see, note the number of individuals observed simultaneously for each species, and submit your findings on the website oiseauxdesjardins.fr. It’s that easy! If you have binoculars, that's even more convenient, but your eyes will do just fine if not. This year, you might especially spot sparrows, tits, robins, nuthatches, and, of course, pigeons—again and again.
