Before being a public holiday, theAssumption is first and foremost a religious festival, celebrated every year by Catholics around the world on August 15, to honor"the death, resurrection, entry into heaven and coronation of the Virgin Mary". After years without a mass on this occasion due to the fire in 2019, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will once again welcome visitors and pilgrims for services and a procession of the faithful through the streets of the capital on August 14 and 15, 2025.
Organized every year since the 17th century, this traditional procession commemorates the vow of Louis XIII, a legislative text that placed France under the protection of the Virgin Mary.
