Manicure: a key ingredient in semi-permanent varnishes is banned - why and what solutions?

No more risky manicures! TPO, the star ingredient in semi-permanent nail varnishes, is to be phased out as of September 1, 2025, as it is considered toxic and a suspected carcinogen. What are the alternatives?

From September 1, 2025, the world of semi-permanent manicures will lose its favorite ingredient: TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide). This component, which made our varnishes harden under UV lamp in a flash, is being withdrawn... following a decision by the European Union. Classified as CMR category 1B (toxic for reproduction) and suspected of being carcinogenic and mutagenic, it is now deemed too risky to remain in our bottles.

The result? No more manufacture, no more sale, no more use. The Direction Générale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes (DGCCRF) has declared a total ban. Even stocks already held in salons will have to be disposed of immediately. The announcement hasnail salon professionals shaking in their boots, but don't panic ... other formulas are already ready to take over!

Until now, TPO was the well-kept secret of the perfect application: express drying, glossy finish, impeccable hold for weeks... But behind the shine, the dark side. Published in May 2025, the European "Omnibus VII" regulation puts a radical crackdown on carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic substances in cosmetics. From September onwards, all products containing TPO will be withdrawn from the market and banned from use, even by professionals.

But good news! Some brands have already begun reformulating their ranges with safer alternatives, such as TPO-L, which promise the same shine and hold... without the hidden risk!

Get your nails ready! Back-to-school 2025 marks the era of "TPO-free" manicures. Cleaner, safer, but as glossy as ever.
