Opened in 1898, the Comparative Paleontology and Anatomy Gallery at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris will close its doors starting January 19, 2026 for several months. Recognized as a historic monument, it requires extensive renovation work to bring its interior spaces up to current standards. These renovations will take approximately 18 months—meaning the gallery will be completely closed for a year and a half during this period.
While exterior renovations have taken place in recent years, including updates to the building's roof and structure, the 2,600-square-meter gallery now needs a fresh touch to keep enchanting the thousands of visitors who discover it each year — by summer 2027. What improvements are planned? These include a revamp of the fire safety system, enhancements to visitor services and collection preservation conditions, and improved accessibility for all audiences.
A much-needed renovation is underway as the Natural History Museum prepares to celebrate its 400th anniversary! This milestone offers an opportunity to "ensure its actions remain relevant today and continue its longstanding mission: to study the incredible diversity of life and promote scientific culture," explains Gilles Bloch, the museum’s president.
