The National Museum of Sèvres Ceramics closed its doors on January 1, 2026, for several years of renovations. However, visitors won’t have to wait in complete silence—during this period, the museum’s collections will be showcased elsewhere.

The National Ceramic Museum - Sèvres has embarked on a historic transformation.Since January 1, 2026, the institution has closed its doors to the public to begin an ambitious modernization project called “Brongniart 2030”.

This ambitious project aims to transform this iconic site into the global reference for ceramics and to enhance the preservation and display of the factory’s collections. The revamped experience will blend heritage and contemporary artistry through a innovative new route.

A Massive Collection Renovation Underway

The main reason for this closure is the launch of a historic collections project, unprecedented in scope. The museum houses nearly 60,000 works that need to be cataloged, studied, and prepared ahead of the building’s renovation. Meanwhile, the Hauts-de-Seine department is carrying out work to enhance the museum’s surroundings and improve access, aligning with the wider "Valley of Culture" initiative.

What is the reopening timetable?

The current closure signals the start of a preparatory phase. According to the tentative schedule:

  • 2026 - 2028: Construction phase of the collections and completion of preliminary studies.
  • 2029: Scheduled start of comprehensive renovation work on the historic monument.
  • By 2030: While the exact date for the full reopening remains undecided, the name of the program, “Brongniart 2030,” hints at an unveiling of the new museum experience around this timeframe.

The Museum That Continues to Thrive

Although the museum galleries are closed, activities at Sèvres continue. The Manufacture remains open, with access available by reservation for guided tours focused on the artisans’ skills and craftsmanship..

As for the collections, they will be showcased off-site, including a major exhibition scheduled for 2026 at the Mobilier National, made possible by the collaboration between the two institutions last year. Parallel to this, the site will continue opening its doors for major national events such as the Heritage Days.
