Covoit IDFM, the new carpooling app launched by Île-de-France Mobilités, is now accessible to all residents of the Île-de-France region. This free carpooling service is available exclusively for Navigo pass holders and aims to unify all subsidized carpooling options in a single platform. Until now, these offers were scattered across multiple different websites and apps.
In practice, no more juggling multiple apps to find a ride. Developed in partnership with Karos, the Covoit IDFM app replaces the various carpooling services funded by the Île-de-France region since 2021. The concept is straightforward: pooling a larger pool of drivers to increase ride options, especially in the outer suburbs, where public transportation is less frequent. This is particularly aimed at the Yvelines, Essonne, and Val-d’Oise departments, where alternatives to driving are not always easy to find.
The app is quite intuitive to use. You simply enter your starting point, destination, and preferred schedules. It then connects you with a driver traveling along a compatible route. Trips can be planned in advance—for example, for daily commuting—or booked on a "flash" mode, up to five minutes before departure, to accommodate last-minute changes. "The idea is to be able to leave your car at the garage for your commute," explains Joachim Renaudin, General Manager for France at Karos. The service is particularly useful for hospital staff working overnight shifts or anyone lacking suitable transportation options for their schedules. A member rating system and built-in messaging foster trust among users. Another plus: if you cancel your return trip, the support team will arrange a taxi or VTC to get you home.
For annual Navigo subscribers, monthly, and Imagine R users, two free trips per day are now available. This benefit, already offered with previous services, has been simplified by consolidating everything into a single app. However, be aware that this free ride applies only to certain journeys: trips starting or ending outside Île-de-France, those beginning or ending within Paris, and routes along existing transit lines are excluded. Non-subscribed passengers will need to pay 50 cents for trips under 20 km, and then 10 cents per additional kilometer up to 30 km, with a cap of €1.50. This small fee is mainly designed to discourage last-minute cancellations.
The service, which launched quietly on December 1st without any advertising campaign, is already seeing impressive early results with 50,000 registrants and more than 380,000 passenger trips completed. It has also covered 7 million kilometers through carpooling and saved 890,000 kg of CO2 emissions, according to figures from Île-de-France Mobilités. By 2025, nearly 3.5 million trips had been subsidized by the region across various platforms, representing a 25% increase compared to 2024.
Beyond traditional carpooling, Ile-de-France Mobilités has also introduced fixed carpooling routes, which operate somewhat like a bus service: you head to a designated stop, register via the app or SMS, and a driver will pick you up along their route. Three such lines are already in service, connecting places like Cernay-la-Ville, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Les Ulis, and the Pont de Sèvres. More routes are set to be added gradually in 2026.
