Heat wave in Paris: yellow alert in place and temperatures up to 37°C this week

Météo-France has placed Paris and the Île-de-France region under yellow heatwave alert for this Wednesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 18, 2026, with extreme heat and tropical nights expected through the weekend across the area. Here’s the latest.

The heatwave is back in Paris and its inner suburbs (Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne), with a yellow alert in effect from Météo-France on Wednesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 18, 2026. And this is only the beginning.

The capital is bracing for its second heatwave of the year, fueled by a plume of scorching air sweeping up from North Africa via Spain. Temperatures are expected to near June records, just days before the official start of summer on June 21, 2026.

What temperatures are forecast for Paris this week?

After daytime highs already flirting with 30 °C at the start of the week (the heatwave threshold), another milestone is set to be crossed from Wednesday. According to Météo-France, 35 °C — i.e., extreme heat — is expected daily through the end of the week in the capital.

On Friday and Sunday, the mercury could rise as high as 37 °C, just a few tenths of a degree short of the June historical record. La Chaîne Météo is a bit more cautious, predicting highs around 35 °C without necessarily surpassing them, while Météo-Villes joins Météo-France in signaling the 37 °C mark.

Why are tropical nights causing so much concern?

It's often at night that heatwaves prove most exhausting. For the body to recover, outdoor temperatures should ideally dip below 20°C. But starting Wednesday, the thermometer is forecast to stay above that threshold for five consecutive nights, according to Météo-France, equating to tropical nights.

The thermometer could even read 25°C at dawn on Sunday and Monday, one degree above the usual full-day average for this time of year. A few showers or thunderstorms, occasionally strong, remain possible, but they’re not likely to bring temperatures down.

Where is it cooler in Île-de-France?

If Paris and its inner suburbs are hit by the same pattern, the outer ring faints a bit better. In Val-d'Oise, Yvelines, Essonne and Seine-et-Marne, nighttime temperatures can be up to 10°C cooler than the city center in the most greenery-dense and least densely populated areas.

The Fontainebleau area (Seine-et-Marne) is among the places widening the gap with Paris proper. The culprit: the urban heat island effect, the phenomenon that traps heat in the city at night due to asphalt, dense built-up areas and a lack of greenery.

For now, no orange weather alert is in effect for the region, but the scenario isn’t ruled out in the second half of the week and could, this time, affect the whole of Île-de-France. We’re monitoring forecast updates from Météo-France and its vigilance map, and adopting the right precautions: stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours, and keep your home cool.

How to protect yourself from the heat in Paris?

The right reflexes stay the same whether there’s a heat alert or not: stay hydrated regularly, avoid strenuous activity between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., and keep your home cool. The City of Paris lists more than 1 400 free cooling islandss, shaded parks, libraries, and museums and pools, and the Canicule Info Service number (0 800 06 66 66) remains reachable.

With heat fueling ozone pollution, we’re keeping an eye on air quality with Airparif, and we’re thinking about checking in on our most vulnerable neighbors. The guidance from Santé Publique France neatly complements these recommendations.
