A premature heat wave hits France in May 2026, with Paris and the Île-de-France region affected by extremely high temperatures. Weather alerts, steps to take, cool places, and suitable activities: here is the essential information to endure the heat.

An episode of early heat is hitting France at the end of May 2026. According to Météo-France, temperatures are well above seasonal norms, with a peak expected between Monday 25 and Wednesday 27 May 2026. This Tuesday 26 May, eight departments are placed under orange heatwave vigilance, while other areas remain under yellow vigilance.

In Paris and the Île-de-France region, even though the highest alert levels mainly affect the western part of the country, the intense heat calls for taking precautions. The elderly, very young children, isolated individuals, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and athletes are particularly exposed.

Facing the heat, a few simple precautions can reduce the risks: drink water regularly, avoid alcohol, limit physical exertion, keep shutters closed during the day, air out early in the morning or late at night, head to cooler places, and check in on vulnerable people regularly. Heat waves can also worsen ozone pollution in the Paris region, especially on the hottest and least windy days.

Where to cool off in Paris during the heatwaves?

Paris offers numerous lieux de fraîcheur accessible during heatwaves: parks and gardens, libraries, museums, public facilities, air-conditioned venues, fountains, misting stations and drinking-water points. The capital counts nearly 1,400 lieux de fraîcheur, about 1,300 points d’eau and several hundred facilities where you can take a break in the cool.

The City of Paris also provides drinking-water points, fountains and misting stations across multiple neighborhoods in the capital during heat waves.

To beat the heat, it’s best to head out early in the morning or later in the day, seek shade, bring a water bottle, and tailor your plans. Some parks and gardens open all night in Paris can also offer a bit more coolness during heat waves.

Best practices for a heatwave

  • Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty;
  • Avoid going out during the hottest hours;
  • Limit strenuous activity and outdoor exercise;
  • Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing;
  • Close shutters and curtains during the day, then open windows to air out at night;
  • Take cool showers without drying off completely;
  • Spend several hours each day in a cool place;
  • Check in on vulnerable or isolated relatives or neighbors;
  • Never leave a child, a vulnerable person, or an animal in a car, even for a few minutes.

If you feel unwell, have a fever, experience extreme fatigue, confusion, severe headaches, or persistent cramps, you should promptly contact a health professional. In an emergency, call 15.
