October 31 protest in Paris: permitted routes, metro, curfews—what you need to know

Published by My de Sortiraparis · Updated on October 30, 2026 at 09:04 p.m.
The October 31, 2026, demonstration in Paris will return to its route between Bastille and Nation following a ruling by the administrative court. With metro stations closed, train stations under protection and curfews in place, here’s what’s changing this Halloween Saturday.

Update Friday evening, October 30: the Paris police prefecture has appealed the administrative court’s ruling to the Council of State. The Bastille–Nation route therefore remains suspended pending its decision, expected overnight from Friday to Saturday.

The October 31, 2026 demonstration in Paris is returning to its historic route. After the inter-union coalition filed an emergency appeal, the Paris Administrative Court on Friday, October 30, suspended an order issued by the Paris Police Prefecture and authorized the CGT march between Place de la Bastille and Place de la Nation, in the 11th and 12th arrondissements. The police prefect immediately appealed to the Council of State, which could rule overnight.

As for transport, the RATP has published its list: 40 metro stations will be closed on Saturday, from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., from the Champs-Élysées to Bastille, including République, Châtelet and the Left Bank. Vélib’ bikes will also be taken out of service, stations will be under protection, and curfews will be in place in Paris and the inner suburbs. Here are the key details, updated on Friday, October 30.

Where will the authorized march go on Saturday?

Friday took an unexpected turn. That morning, the police prefecture had banned the routes planned by the CGT and the Yellow Vests under decree No. 2026-01481 and No. 2026-01484, redirecting everyone to the Maréchaux boulevards, between Porte de Bagnolet (20th arrondissement) and Porte de Charenton (12th arrondissement).

The CGT, FO, FSU, Solidaires, Fage, the Union étudiante and Unef challenged the decision in court. The emergency judge ruled in their favor regarding the union activity track:

  • Departure scheduled for 2 p.m. from Place de la Bastille
  • Route ends at Place de la Nation, via eastern Paris
  • March bringing together trade unions and youth organizations

For the Yellow Vests’ Bastille–Concorde route, no court ruling has been announced so far: it remains banned, as does the 2 p.m. sit-in outside the National Assembly (7th arrondissement). We take a look at the standoff over the Bastille–Nation route in a dedicated article.

Nothing has been completely settled yet. Laurent Nuñez announced shortly afterward that the police prefect was appealing, citing the damage caused in the area on October 17. The case is now before the Conseil d'État, which could issue its decision overnight from Friday to Saturday, according to franceinfo. If the appeal is rejected, the march will indeed set off from Bastille. Otherwise, the route along the Maréchaux boulevards, between Porte de Bagnolet and Porte de Charenton, could be back on the table.

On October 24, the reverse scenario had played out: the Bastille-Nation route, approved by the prefecture, had been rejected by judges the previous evening. This time, the decision goes the other way, sending the procession back toward the Faubourg Saint-Antoine.

Which Metro, RER and Vélib’ stations are closed on Saturday?

At the police prefecture’s order, the RATP has announced that 40 metro stations will be closed on Saturday across all 14 lines. Closures begin at 5:30 a.m. in the west and central areas (Champs-Élysées, Concorde, Madeleine, around the National Assembly), spread to République and Bastille from 9 a.m., then to Châtelet-Les Halles, Opéra, the Left Bank (the 5th and 6th arrondissements) and the area around Nation between 10 a.m. and noon. Lines 6 and 12 will also be partially suspended.

As for the RER, Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station (RER A) remains closed all day, with trains passing through without stopping, while Châtelet-Les Halles station closes at 8 p.m. Tram lines T3a and T3b are suspended from 11 a.m. on both sides of Porte de Vincennes. As for cycling, 110 Vélib' stations have been out of service since Friday, with a gradual reopening overnight from Sunday into Monday.

This list is still changing, especially as the Bastille–Nation route now depends on the appeal before the Council of State. For the full details, line by line and hour by hour, see our article on the 40 metro and RER stations closed on Saturday, updated as RATP makes announcements. The list of 110 Vélib' stations closed is also available online. For comparison, on October 24, more than 30 stations had been closed from 9 a.m.

What curfews are in effect this weekend in Île-de-France?

Several orders have been issued or announced for Halloween weekend. They are not all aimed at the same audience:

  • Paris, République and Les Halles (general public): from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of October 31 to November 1 and November 1 to 2, under Order No. 2026-01485. Residents, people who work in the area and emergency services are exempt.
  • Paris, unaccompanied minors: from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for three nights, from Friday, October 30 to Monday, November 2, in several areas including Étoile, Champs-Élysées, Élysée, Madeleine, Concorde and Gare Saint-Lazare (8th arrondissement). The previous order was suspended by the administrative court on October 28.
  • Aéroville, in Tremblay-en-France (Seine-Saint-Denis): unaccompanied minors are banned from the area around the shopping center from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for three nights, from October 30 to November 2, under Order No. 2026-348.
  • Hauts-de-Seine: unaccompanied minors are banned from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of October 31 to November 2 around Les Quatre Temps and the CNIT (La Défense), So Ouest (Levallois-Perret) and Qwartz (Villeneuve-la-Garenne), according to announcements by the Hauts-de-Seine prefect.

During previous curfews, Châtelet, Les Halles and République stations, as well as Châtelet-Les Halles RER station, remained closed all night. The same scenario is likely on Saturday and Sunday evening, as we explain in our article on the stations that could close during the curfew. We also take a look at the curfew for minors in Paris and the shopping centers affected in Île-de-France.

Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon: what to expect

Under Order No. 2026-01482, the Prefecture of Police has placed both stations within a security perimeter this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.:

  • Gare du Nord (10th arrondissement): area between Rue de Dunkerque, Rue de Maubeuge, Boulevard de la Chapelle and Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis
  • Gare de Lyon (12th arrondissement): area between Place Louis-Armand, Rue de Bercy, Rue de Rambouillet and Rue de Chalon
  • Protest gatherings, pyrotechnics and objects that could be used as projectiles are prohibited
  • Pat-downs and baggage searches may be carried out; refusal may result in being escorted out of the area

Enhanced ID checks are also planned at other stations and along major routes. If you’re taking a train on Saturday, keep an ID with you and allow extra time. All the details are in our article on Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon under protection.

Why such a heavy security operation?

In a letter to prefects, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez says the risk of urban violence is “very high” on Saturday, from early evening until late at night. Several factors are at play:

  • Calls for gatherings in city centers spotted on social media, under the pretext of Halloween, with particular vigilance from 8 p.m. onward
  • The prefecture estimates turnout at between 100,000 and 150,000 participants
  • The looting on October 17, 18 and 24, which affected many businesses
  • The terrorist threat remains high

On the other side, the setup is the same as last weekend: RAID units stationed in front of the most vulnerable public buildings, drones flying over the routes, water cannon trucks, and police staffing levels raised to 75%. We go into more detail about these measures in our article on the security arrangements for October 31 and on Laurent Nuñez’s Halloween alert.

Another ban was announced on Friday: three anti-fur activist gatherings planned for Saturday at noon near luxury shops on Rue Saint-Honoré and Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré (1st and 8th arrondissements) have been banned under Order No. 2026-01483.

How to go out for Halloween without any nasty surprises?

On Halloween night, it’s best to avoid the major squares in the city center (République, Châtelet-Les Halles, Bastille, Champs-Élysées) and plan your journey home before 11 p.m. if you’re passing through République or Les Halles. Parents of minors who are out alone would be well advised to check which areas are subject to curfews.

Before heading out, check the RATP traffic updates and our tips on getting around despite the protests. Our guides to Halloween events that could be disrupted and the Halloween parties in Paris in 2026 help you keep a Plan B away from the crowds. All disruptions are also listed in our Île-de-France public transport guide.

What mobilizations will follow October 31?

The movement does not end this Saturday. Here are the upcoming dates announced:

  • Tuesday, November 3: high school student mobilization and Interfac IDF student demonstration from the Panthéon to the Medef headquarters (7th arrondissement)
  • Thursday, November 5: interprofessional strike called by the inter-union coalition, with strike calls at SNCF and in the national education system
  • Friday, November 6: rolling strikes and blockades called by the Yellow Vests
  • Saturday, November 7: Act IV of the Yellow Vests, across France

November 5 could have a much bigger impact on daily life across the Île-de-France region. Transport, schools, route: get the latest in our article on the November 5, 2026 strike.
