Also known as Day of the Dead, Dia de Muertos is probably the best-known Mexican holiday in the world. It takes place every year on November 1st and 2nd in Mexico and in many Mexican communities around the world, particularly in the United States.
During Dia de Muertos, Mexicans celebrate the lives and memories of their deceased loved ones in a joyous and colorful way - first children on November 1, then adults on November 2.
During these two days - and sometimes even for several weeks, depending on the region and village - families prepare altars to honor their deceased, decorated with a multitude of gifts; then get to work cooking a host of traditional dishes for the living and the dead, before parading through the streets in full masquerade.
