The Fête de la Musique is back this Sunday, June 21, 2026, bringing a lineup of top music options across Île-de-France. For residents of Val-d'Oise, head to the town of Chaumontel, which this year hosts the band Break Free for a Queen tribute concert.

Want to celebrate live music? Then don’t miss the latest edition of the Fête de la musique on June 21.

But what exactly is the Fête de la Musique? A free, popular musical celebration, it was created in 1982 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry’s Studies and Research Service conducted a major survey on French cultural practices. It revealed that five million people, including one in two young people, play a musical instrument. Consequently, Jack Lang, Christian Dupavillon (an architect-designer and a member of his Cabinet), and Maurice Fleuret conceived a large, accessible festival with the aim of letting all musicians perform and be heard. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21, 1982, the symbolic date of the summer solstice.
