And every year, the great tips, the artists, the classical music and electronic music concerts, and the quirky, offbeat events inusual ideas flood Paris and the rest of Île-de-France every year. The result? On June 21, you find yourself adrift amid a sea of free concerts with no idea where to start. Fear not—marking 44 years of Fête de la Musique, we’ve got you covered. Here, we reveal the best musical deals in Montmartre, that beloved neighborhood for many Parisians !

By the way, do you know the story behind the Fête de la Musique and how it began? The Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 at the behest of the Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry’s Department of Studies and Research conducted a large survey on the cultural practices of the French. It revealed that five million people, including one in two young people, played a musical instrument. From there, Jack Lang, Christian Dupavillon, an architect-scenographer and member of his cabinet, and Maurice Fleuret envisioned a grand popular celebration aimed at giving all musicians a chance to express themselves and gain recognition. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21, 1982, the symbolic summer solstice day.
